SEND
At The Arnewood School, our vision is to unlock potential for every student through our values of Aspirations, Togetherness and Success. We are committed to ensuring all pupils - whatever their ability, background or need - make strong progress and enjoy a broad, balanced curriculum alongside their peers.
Our approach
All teachers at Arnewood are teachers of students with SEND. We believe that strategies supporting SEND learners benefit everyone. Lessons are scaffolded to ensure access for all, with high expectations matched by high levels of support. We recognise that many students will experience additional needs at some point in their school life. Our focus is on early identification, high‑quality teaching, and tailored support to remove barriers to learning.
What counts as SEND?
A student may be identified as having a Special Educational Need or Disability if they:
- Have greater difficulty learning than most children of the same age
- Have a disability that hinders access to typical school facilities
- Are not making expected progress, despite targeted support
SEND provision refers to anything additional to or different from what is normally offered to students of the same age.
How we support students
We endeavour to personalise support based on individual needs, which may include some of the following examples of support:
- Clear identification of needs, including liaison with external professionals and in‑school assessments (e.g. dyslexia screening)
- Classroom observations and advice for teaching staff, including seat planning and strategies
- Mixed‑ability or ability grouping depending on subject
- Regular monitoring of progress and engagement
- Student Passports, created with parents, students, pastoral staff, the SENDCo and teachers
- Additional literacy or subject‑specific interventions (small group or 1:1)
- Personalised pathways such as reduced GCSE options, study skills, work placements, vocational courses or college tasters
- Close communication with families to support shared decision‑making
- Access to our Learning Support Hub and Student Services for social, emotional, mental health and medical support
Our SEND team
SEND at Arnewood is led by Mrs Gemma Battrick‑Mantell (SENDCo), who oversees the strategic development of provision, day‑to‑day coordination, and liaison with families, staff and external agencies. She is supported by a dedicated team of SEND Coordinators and Learning Support Assistants who provide in‑class and pastoral support.
