At the start of year 11, pupils study genetics and variation. They develop an understanding of how characteristics including genetic diseases are inherited.

Assessment is a formal exam at the end of the ½ term including long answers, short answers, multiple choice and calculations.

Chemistry

At the start of year 11, pupils study the atmosphere and its chemistry. Pupils develop knowledge of reactions within the atmosphere and how the atmosphere has changed over time.

Physics

Our first topic for Year11 is Magnetism and Electromagnetism. Pupils start by considering the difference between induced and permanent magnets. They then go on to study how electrical current can be used to create electromagnets.

Autumn 2

Biology

Following on from variation, pupils study how this then leads to the evolution of a species.

Some time is also spent preparing for and reviewing the year 11 exams.

Assessment during this time will be paper 1 mock exams as students prepare for their summer GCSE.

Chemistry

Following on from looking at the atmosphere in autumn 1, students look at other resources and also looking at how water is made safe to drink.

Physics

Pupils apply their knowledge of electromagnetism and forces to build electric motors and transformers and to explain how they work. Some time is also spent preparing for and reviewing the year 11 exams.

Pupils will develop an understanding of the evidence to support the theory of evolution and make their own decision regarding this theory. They then move on to study the impact that the human population is having on the environment.

Pupils will begin studying Theme 1 of the GCSE AQA course entitled Current and Future Study and Employment. Pupils will start by studying the topic of school including subjects, the school day and going to school in other Francophone countries. Changing Cities:

Students begin to investigate contrasting trends in urbanisation over the last 50 years in different parts of the world and the reasons for different levels and rates of urbanisation in countries at varying levels of development. Students will also be able to describe the distribution of urban population in the UK and the location of its major urban centres and explain the factors that causes the rate and degree of urbanisation to vary across the UK.

Students begin an in-depth study of a city in an emerging country ‘Sao Paulo in Brazil’ and a city in a developed country “Southampton in UK”.

Changing Cities:

Students are expected to apply their knowledge of changing urban areas to explain the changes that have occurred in a city in an emerging country and in a developed country. In particular, students will be able to explain the site and situation of the chosen cities, the structure of the cities, the sequence of changes that have occurred and the reasons behind said changes, the population characteristics and the impacts of migration on the urban area, the varying QoL for residents in those urban areas and how the government is trying to make the cities more sustainable.

Human Fieldwork Preparation and Analysis:

Students begin their urban fieldwork preparation. Students begin to explore how to formulate an enquiry question based on the location of Bournemouth. Their enquiry question is ‘To investigate changes in the function and quality of Bournemouth’s CBD.’ Students gain an understanding of how fieldwork data is collected and the types of secondary and primary sources that may be useful to answer their enquiry question. 

Following their fieldtrip, students build on their Year 10 fieldwork knowledge to analyse fieldwork data, draw, label, annotate and interpret various data presentation techniques and write descriptively, analytically and critically about their findings. Finally, students learn to draw well evidenced and informed conclusions about geographical questions and issues using primary and secondary research.

Students will begin to study the first topic ‘Familie im Wandel’ in which they will broaden their vocabulary on the topic of family and relationships covered at KS4 as well as begin the topic of ‘Die digitale Welt’ in which they will expand their vocabulary on the topic of social media and the internet.  We will revisit the grammar topics of present tense verb conjugation of regular and irregular verbs and modal verbs as well as the perfect tense and correct word formation and genders of nouns.  Additionally, we will recap word order rules, particularly time – manner – place as well as cover cases in more depth as well as prepositions.

Students will finish studying the topic of ‘Die Digitale Welt’ and begin ‘Jugendkultur: Mode, Musik und Fernsehen’ in which they learn about youth culture today.  They will be familiar with some vocabulary related to music and TV genres from GCSE but we will broaden their vocabulary on this topic, in particular focusing on extended writing skills as well as reading and listening skills.  In tandem we will recap correct pronoun usage (with cases too) as well as verbs which take specific cases.  Also, we will revise the imperatives and word order after conjunctions which introduce subordinate clauses.

In this term we begin to study the course film ‘Good Bye, Lenin!’ in tandem with beginning the second theme’s first topic ‘Feste und Traditionen’ which expands on the customs and celebrations topic covered at KS4.  Students will learn how to recognise and use the passive with ‘werden’ as well as correct usage of separable and inseparable verbs and reflexive verbs. Additionally, we will cover necessary vocabulary and skills relating to structuring an essay.

We complete the final two topics of ‘Kunst und Architektur’ and ‘Das Berliner Kulturleben damals und heute’ during this half term in which we introduce the role of art and architecture in the past and the present day.  We explore Berlin from a historical and modern day perspective.  We will revisit the grammar points of word order, comparatives and superlatives as well as adjective endings.  We will introduce infinitive constructions with(out) ‘zu’ and conditional clauses too.

In this half term we focus on exam preparation and revision of the AS course, focusing on essay writing skills, listening and reading skills as well as accuracy when translating as well as revisiting any areas of grammar where common misconceptions may still arise.  We complete many past papers, providing personalised feedback on each one.

Students will revise and deepen their knowledge of features of Music for Ensemble (including Chamber Music, Jazz and Blues and Musicals), and Film Music. There will be a mock exam in November as part of the preparation for the listening exam at the end of Year 11.

Work will begin on the second composition to a brief.

Second performance will be recorded during the Autumn 2 half term.

Revision

Within this topic, students learn about different types of families and how family structures can change. They learn about fertility and pregnancy choices and how these choices will differ depending on the relationship type. Students learn how to manage change, loss, grief and bereavement.

Spring 1

Independence:

Within this topic, students learn how to assess and manage risks in new independent situations such as social situations. Students learn how to assess emergency and non-emergency situations and how to contact the appropriate services. Building on KS3 work regarding healthy lifestyles, students also learn the links between lifestyle choices and some cancers as well as the importance of screening and how to perform self-examinations. Students are taught how to register with a GP surgery and how to access doctors, sexual health clinics, opticians and other health services. Further, students consider the influences and risk relating to cosmetic and aesthetic body alterations and the impact of social media on this. Finally, they learn emergency first aid skills as well as about blood, organ and stem cell donation.

Within this topic, students build upon their KS3 and prior KS4 learning concerning gender identity, gender expression and sexual orientation. Furthermore, students learn the legal provisions relating to how to challenge harassment and stalking, including online. Students are taught about the various forms of relationship abuse and how to access support in abusive relationships.

Co-Curricular: There are anti-bullying reps in each year group, whole school council, an LGBTQ+ society that runs every Wednesday lunch time and ‘the Zone’ which runs every Mon, Tues, Thurs and Fri, centred on student mental health awareness and support.  Further, students are able to apply for Duke of Edinburgh award which aids student contribution to the wider community.
