World Book Day 2025

This year’s theme for World Book Day was ‘Read Your Way’, designed to encourage more of our students to enjoy reading for pleasure, however they wish to! ‘Read Your Way’ called on everyone to let go of pressure and expectations, giving children a choice, and a chance, to enjoy reading.

With this in mind, we chose to celebrate for the whole week, with lots of activities designed to encourage conversations around reading.

Staff submitted photos of their bookshelves for students to guess who they belonged to:

These ones belong to me (Mrs Atkins), and Miss Hardiman (History). There were also ‘shelfies’ from  a number of other staff, including Mr Jaggar (ICT), Mrs Anderson (English) and Mr Nicholson (Geography), and students really enjoyed trying to work out who owned them.

Throughout the week, we held a ‘Where’s Wally’ hunt, where Wally went for a wander around the school, and students were given a clue each morning as to where he had been. They then had to find a token in his location and bring it to the library to claim their very own Where’s Wally book as a prize.

Staff dressed up as book characters on the Thursday and there was a wonderful variety of inventive costumes. My favourite moment of the day was bumping into Professor Snape (Mr Hutson) having a conversation with a banana (Mr Colman)! The winning staff costumes were from ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’ (Drama) and Oliver Twist (Finance and Admin). There were also some fantastic costumes from students, with Charlotte B (The Lorax) and Layla C (Smurfette) from Sixth Form having particularly brilliant efforts.

We had a wonderful World Book Week, and we hope that the activities inspired valuable conversations about reading and encouraged our students to read their way.
